Just calmly and quietly (but with authority) say to him, "Please don't say that. It isn't what nice people do." Whenever he says it tell him that. If he keeps saying it look directly at him and say, "I've asked you not to say that. Its fresh, and you won't have any friends if you're fresh to people."

He may stop right away, or it may take a few calm reminders; but he'll stop. They hear stuff somewhere, and they pick it up and use it. Half the time they don't know there's any wrong with it until they're told.

Be matter-of-fact about it, though. Don't let him think its getting to you.

You are the parent. You must teach your children how to behave. If they are behaving in any way that is unacceptable, you must respond and correct that behavior or they will never learn that it is not acceptable. Telling someone to shut up is not just rude. It is giving the child the wrong impression that it is ok to tell adults what to do. The grownups are the boss not the child.

If he is telling you that then the next time he says something to you after that, don't answer him. When he finally pesters you enough without getting an answer and he asks you why you won't talk to him, then tell him it's because he told you to shut up and you did.

Sooner or later he will get the idea and stop doing it. Otherwise you are going to have to find some way to explain to him and make him understand that it isn't nice to say something like that and you need to be consistent with it so he knows he can't get away with it.

Good luck.

Tell him we don't say that. I am assuming you don't tell him or you husband to shut up. I know that sounds rude but I don't mean it that way. Kid that age mimic what they hear at home or at school. Mine is six and still doing it. She told her sister she was a dumb as$ because I said it the other day when someone cut me off on the highway. Anyway I would just tell him it's not nice and give him another way to tell someone to be quite.

He is old enough to know that sort of behavior is not acceptable, when he starts send him to his room until he can be more respectful, and hopefully there isn't a television, video games, computer etc in there because those are the last thing he needs in his room.

you need to respond to this. first, do you or your spouse use such language around your child? if so, stop immediately. then make sure your child understands that he is being disrespectful and should learn to say what he wants to say in a more respectful way.

my daughter started with "stupid". We told her that it was not a nice word and she shouldn't use it. And then we looked at where the word came into her vocabulary. Turned out it was us and we worked very hard to stop saying that and any other word that we didn't want to hear our baby saying.
