I have a six year old cat who is pulling out his fur. I recently discovered a bald patch on th base of his tail. I believe he is currently on a flea med. We had an older cat who died the beginning of May, we started noticing clumps of hair around the house in the middle of August. Its the beginning of September and I just witnessed him clean himself and then pull large clumps of hair out and then found the bald patch. Not sure what to think here.

Take him to the vet. It could be he has some sort of allergy and needs treatment. You don't want him to be uncomfortable and he obviously is right now.

Poor kitty! This could be any number of things from stress, being nervous, to flea/ flea medication allergy. I had a collie which used to do this but she also had a ton of scabs where she used to dig herself raw. She was always at the vets my wallet was getting poorer and she kept looking worse. I insisted she see a dermotologist and he reccomended a Dr Breen located in Cleveland, Ohio (since relocated and in the Columbus, Ohio area) one visit to Dr Breen and problem solved. He stated first off she was being bathed too often which was drying out her skin. Not sure if you bathe your cat (some do) he stated bathe my dog no more than twice a year and said as long as you keep her brushed her coat is fine. He than stated that she was not only allergic to fleas, she was allergic to flea products as well and she was over medicated on flea products. I tried flea collers, flea creams, soaps and the list goes on and on. He prescribed her to use Sebloux medicated shampoo he stated that the sores were from her scratching and infecting the area . This shampoo was in a white bottle with blue writing and purchased from the vet's office it may be called something else but I'm sure they'd know what you were reffering to . He also stated that twice a year I spray the yard with Duratrol . This was the first and last trip to the dermotologist, she grew a nice thick triple coat and started gaining her appetite and weight back. Best thing check with your vet, inform him of the loss of the other pet because she may be grieving, if nothing else, take her to a dermatologist, it's not as expensive as you'd think also your pet is worth the cost. Good Luck! I hope this information helped some. Oh, a few years later, I did try the advantage on my collie and was very surprised how well it worked for her and didn't make her sick. It does however make my daughter's one cat sick, not to worry, we did use the one for cats on her cat.

sometimes cats will develope an allergy and will do things like pull there hair out. It could be to food or pesticides. I had a cat that did this after I moved to a new apartment. as soon as I moved again he stopped. Most vets will say it is food related. Has the diet changed at all.? Sorry I couldn't help more. Just look for anything that you have done that has changed and change things one by one.

Call the vet. It could be stress or allergies. Right after I moved to a new place, my cat started licking its stomach constantly until it had bald spots there. When it felt comfortable in the new place, it stopped the licking.
