It isn't stem cell research, at least not for most people...it is abortion. There are other, better ways to harvest the stem cells than from dead babies...why insist on killing infants for research?
While we're on the subject, I read just today that large companies are actually holding patents on genes....and making it difficult if not impossible to do important research by charging ridiculous amounts of money for "their" genes!! The article was in this month's Reader's Digest, read it for yourself.
It isn't Christians who are holding up important research...it is the "other" god America worships....GREED!!!!!!

It starts with the belief in a soul. The time when the soul is imparted into a human has drifted backwards through the centuries from birth all the way back to conception. Therefore, even though a mass of cells is unable to exist outside of the laboratory environment, and unless successfully implanted in a woman's womb, will not ever become a legal, viable human, Christian fundamentalists have denoted it as a human being. They say it has a soul. Nevermind that from this standpoint, all stillbirths and miscarriages should receive funerals, burials, and headstones. They have taken their objections regarding abortion and carried them to an absurd conclusion.

The entire debate hinges on a religious standard that did not even exist before the 20th century.

Stem cells which are derived from human embryos, and the issue of abortion raise the same questions. From a spiritual perspective we ask when does the soul enter the body? when is it 'aware'? Without knowing it's hard to decide if this issue is right or wrong. However I like to think the soul is much stronger than what we give it credit for, especially when it hasn't yet developed into a personality in this world of ours. Life always goes on in one way or another.

In a god awful world where grown ups are working to make things better for humanity because in part they have integrity and the character to gain this talented knowledge in the first place ,it should be obvious ignorance vs intelligence is called controversy
only when clouded thinking can't take a stand for the good of mankind confusion=controversy.what if u or they were suffering one of the ailments that might be treated..if they could only get

It's the same reason why evolution is controversial to some. Both are perceived to encroach on areas of fundamental theology which, in turn, threaten the very identity of some because the theology is the foundation of their worldview and who they believe they are. If one believes in a soul and that the soul is transferred to a body at conception, then one sees a major threat in the treatment of embryos as essentially raw material. The way to resolve the issue is to not treat theology as dogmatic truth.

Fetal stem cell research.....any other stem cell research is fine. The controversy is when the research destroys human life. This is also the basic position of the Church.

There are a number of other sources for harvesting these cells that do not involve aborting or destroying human life. This is completely acceptable. To develop a human fetus for the purpose of "harvesting" is not acceptable.

My concern is that the Supreme court allowed "life forms" to be patented. With stem-cells research we might find corporations "have ownership" of life, health..etc. Things that are so fundamental to leave open for corporate morality that is motivated only by profit.
There is good potential in the research for all humanity, but no financial entity should have this power.

Don't be fooled....just as abortion clinics encourage abortion and sell the baby body parts for the use in 'research'..stem cell research is the same thing. That devaluing human life has caused a gradual increase in pedophilia, child abuse, abuse and murder of pregnant woman is no coincidence...

The christian community do not see it as a good way to do research since it "destroys" an embryo. However if the baby will be aborted anyways, I don't see what the problem is. By the way I am a wiccan (a witch actually). If the cells can bring a cure to end suffering to someone else I am all for it.
