I'm also getting novicaine. What medicine will I get (to calm me down)...the oral sedative??? I'm not going to be able to be put to sleep during this.....because he's just a dentist......not an oral surgeon.
Thanks!!

Halcion is the most common pill prescribed for sedation dentistry, which is what it sounds like you are getting. Technically, Halcion is not a sedative, its an hypnotic, but it does have sedative effects.
Good luck to you.

The medicine that you get will more than likely be a sedating medication such as xanax, valium, ativan , etc. Nitrous Oxide is only given in the office not by prescription, but they may give you nitrous also, with the novacaine to numb, and the sedative. That is usually what a dentist does because only the oral surgeon can anesthetize you.You will do fine.Hope this helps.

You act as though politicians breaking the chains of the Constitution is some new occurrance. You also act as though the Republicans some how better than the Democrats when the truth is that they've both been acting quite authoritarian, and "socialist" for nearly a century now. Glad to see that you don't like what is going on, though! My suggestion: vote Libertarian.

Good answers on the oral sedatives.
I would add that general dentists can and do put people under general anesthetic. They need specialized training, but it is done. One dentist I know of is also a licensed anesthesiologist and she takes her equipment into other dental offices to administer and monitor patients.
However, the majority of general dentists prefer not to use GA due to liability issues. It's not so much a matter of "can't" but "won't".

Why are they removing the tooth? Haven't you been to an Endodontist? The idea is to save the tooth and having a root canal will do that.
The oral sedative will calm you down, he is using that instead of laughing gas (which is probably isn't licensed to use).

The pill you will probably be given is an Ativan. It is in the benzodiazapine family. I think I spelled that right. It includes medicines like valium, xanax, ativan, etc. They are good medications to use for mild sedation before procedures. Ativan or lorazepam is usually the one given for this type of procedure. Good luck.
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is not an oral pill, it is an inhalant.

My dentist prescribes Mepergan for me to take 1 hour before my appointment, it takes away ALL anxiety and helps you get through your procedure. Have someone drive you if you are prescribed something, I am a big chicken when it comes to dentistry. Good luck!

Just because your dentist is not an oral surgeon doesn't mean he can't sedate you for treatment. Usually hypertensive patients get valium before treatments to keep them calm for treatments.
