We find sex postures sculptured in out side walls of the temples and inside ,there, idol of lord or Siba Linga along with Joni Peeth. These are found in most of the temples of Hinduism. There are definitely some logical thoughts of our ancient saints and sages.
Sex is the gate way of the mortals to come to the world. Nobody can deny it. One who is not interested to reach the inner reality or true self may return from the mortals plane, simply; visiting the outside wall of our Temples and one who likes to reach the Universal Truth or reality of God or Self may enter the Temple to find the path of God , who is witnessing every things that related to His creation, without being effected by the principle of cause and effect.

Many reasons....
1- Sexual intercouse represented/represents the ultimate connection to Heavently Bliss
2- Sexual intercouse is the means of procreation, which is also represented as the planting of crops, the calving of cows, etc. Fertility is a major reason that many cultures worship and pray to gods.
3- Because the images are representing the gods' and goddesses' creation of the Universe, in what is refered to in the study of mythology as "the sacred marriage". Many religions believ that the universe was created by the sexual union of the supreme god and supreme goddess. The goddess then gives birth to creation.

You didn't mention what sculptures...or what church...
but "sex postures" ???? For sexually explicit statuary/sculptures, it seem that you must be referring to many shrines/temples in India where the sexual energy displayed by the gods is critical to their belief system...it is not dirty, inappropriate, crude, lewd, or any other westernized word you might be tempted to use....
Read about their beliefsystem...the sexual energy of the gods -as displayed in their sculptures/statues/art work-depicts the creation of the universe, the creation of love, and especially...the triad of death, reproduction and life ....
Don't let your prejudiced/biased views of sexuality sit in an unfair, unqualified judgement of images that are not acceptable to your belief system

Respect other beliefs if you want others to respect yours

I suppose it dates back to Celtic/Egyptian times which of course Christian churches have tried to conceal the rites from us. You might as well ask why so many Catholic priests have been caught having sex with children. Maybe they know something and what they tell the masses is not what is the truth. There have been many religions/beliefs that believe that sexual rites lead one to heaven. Of course, unlike child molesters, the rites have to do with purity and cleanliness. If you are asking only about nakedness, that is not sex - that is our true state as human beings. Since we were cast from the Garden of Eden when we were perfect, we have felt it necessary to cover ourselves. Once we realize that our true state of purity involves nothing of this man-made world, we may all cast off our clothing with no consequences. Judgement is in the eye of the beholder. You are judging what you see by your preconceptions and experiences in this life. Please question what you are feelling - this is an area that can extend your spirituality exponentially. God loves us all - He created us and none of us or our depictions are not of God. Become comfortable with your physical body and you may find that you will become extremely comfortable with your spiritual body. There is nothing to be ashamed of - we are created by God and all is perfect in every way - clothed or not clothed.

Sex is one of the most beautiful things created by god. So why not ? It is the perspective with which you look at things. As spiritual maturity in a person increases, they realise that nothing in this universe can be separated from god / godliness. Anything and everything (including all our thoughts, feelings, emotions) belong to god, come from god and go back to god. its all one. The trick is separating ourselves from distractions and focussing on god. The day one is able to do that, they are on their path to Nirvana.

Although it's a novel (and a darn good one at that), check out Phil Rickman's The Man in the Moss. He goes into very good, fact-backed explanations of why this is seen in at least the UK.
