The memory may not be making a good connection on the motherboard. Try reseating the memory sticks.

The memory Module is not seated tightly, or a bad stick of memory, and also when you upgrade memory, you are suppose to update the BIOS.

Upgrading Memory
Upgrading the memory on a PC is a fairly simple task. You first have to determine what kind of memory your
motherboard supports. If you are using SIMMs, you will need to replace memory in pairs of sets of four. If you
are using DIMMs, you can replace the memory a chip at a time.
Once you have determined the type of memory and purchased it, you will need to power down the machine and
open the case to your computer.
Remember to use caution with static electricity and wear a wrist strap whenever working on a PC.
Remove any memory if all of the slots are full. Open the two side latches which hold the memory secure and
press the RAM chip firmly into its socket. Memory chips are all designed to fit in only one direction so you
have no fear of putting the wrong side in. Once the memory is in the slot, close the two latches.
Power on the PC. Your BIOS setup program will probably recognize the new memory automatically and reboot
to save the changes. Once the changes are saved by the BIOS, your upgrade is complete! Good Luck

in case you OS is more recent than ME/NT4 upgrading the reminiscence from 128 to 512 will make a huge difference. i might want to imagine that with 128 Mb RAM your not straightforward stress might want to be thrashing (constaintly going) because the OS strikes stuff to and from it. once you do not have sufficient reminiscence the OS will use the not straightforward stress to get more desirable center reminiscence. regrettably the not straightforward stress is gradual in evaluation to really center reminiscence. With 128 it received't longer might want to objective this and your throughput will leap substancially. when you're utilising win ninety 8 the OS criteria are not from now on as great so even as you'll see some progression it truly is not as major

Doesnt sound like your checkin it in the right spot to me! If youre checking available physical memory in system information, it will only show what amount of ram isnt being used! I.E., if you have programs running when you check it here, it will change depending on how much crap you have running. Watch your screen during bootup to find the actual amount of ram your system has.

Depending on age of computer the max memory capacity may be 256. Or, your memory is corrupt. Burn a Memtest 86 boot cd and run the test. If it finds corrupt memory, you're boned.

It seems that one of your memery chips have a loose connection, or dust accumulated in the connecting slots.
Take all precautions, and take the chips out of the slot, bow out dust from the slots, and press the sticks back in.
Then see if it works.
