No. My mother is schizophrenic; she was diagnosed shortly after I was born. It was certainly a rough road when I was a kid but I came out of it okay and she wasn't any worse as a parent than a lot or normal people.

I will say, however, that sometimes a person's illness is so severe that there are points when it should be considered whether or not the child/ren should be around their mentally ill parent.

Also, if you consider that almost everyone can be diagnosed with some sort of "mental" disorder or problem these days, that'd be a lot of people to lock away!

No, I don't believe that. The person who said that is very ignorant about what mental illness is and what that encompasses. If they have ever been depressed, and most people have experienced that at least once in their life, that is mental illness.

There are some illnesses, that are severe, which can be passes on to children and the parents need to do some heavy soul searching if they are considering a child.

Unfortunately, in this country, mental illness still carries a stigma, even will all of the millions of people out there on anti-depressants.

I don't know what the point of sterilizing them would be. If you locked them away, they wouldn't reproduce anyway.

Also, not all mental disorders are genetic. And it depends on the severity of the disorder. I have "mental problems" (depression), but anyone if tries to lock me away, I buss a cap in day a ss.

Some people are absolutely insane, and are being institutionalized. It's sad, but it's for their safety and the safety of society. We can pray for such unfortunates.

Love, Jack.

Well, we'd have to really do a serious clarification of what exactly constitutes mental problems but I'm all for taking it a step further than sterilization and locking away.

Luckily many mental health issues can be taken care of with medications.

They used to sterilize mentally handicapped people because they said they couldn't be good parents. I've seen people with supposedly high iq's whose parenting skills I question.

Unless someone specifically asks to be sterilized, then no no one should be sterilized and locked away.

The person who told you that has his/her own issues I think he/she needs to deal with.

Depends on how severe their mental problems are.

My roomate had them and she threw my antique (19th century) violins out into the alley, threw away a brand new air popper and almost burnt the house down with ME IN IT!

I had her taken away by 4 police men and THEY left scuff marks on the floor as she was over 6' and over 250 pounds!

It depends on the severity of mental illness. I mean, if you are insane and gonna be in and out of hospitals your whole life, a kid deserves better.

No, but people who believe that things like that should be done to others should volunteer themselves first before harming others.
