The simple answer is simply they shouldn't be. The church has been responsible for some of the worst atrocities on human rights throughout history, but not exclusively the Christian Church mind you. Many religions, if not most, seem to promote discrimination and segregation in society. Hence I will never follow a religion, nor participate in its practices. The only belief system that I have come across that seems to promote tolerance, acceptance and equality is the Buddhist Structure.

The church has a vested interest in safeguarding human rights because all human rights come from God, not the state, and not from other men.

for one, people are the church. it is a fundamental moral issue when one's right is trampled. and for humanity's sake, the church recognizes this. the respect of one's life (and rights). no one should step over the boundaries or limits of what is due for us. and also, the only thing standing between right and wrong (specially moral issues), is the church....

uI guess the same way a parent of a person protest about a drunk driver that killed there kid.
The government lets us by beer and wine and even have bars, but soon as you pull out of the bar you can get a DUI or if you kill someone driving, you get prison terms.
