It depends on your MOS. But, basically, across the board, they've been going up. You'll get more for a combat MOS, less for a rear echolon position. When you hear about the bonuses, remember that they're going to take taxes out of it. Also, if you don't sign up in a war zone, you'll get it in installments. Like for me, mine is over a period of six years. The initial payment was supposed to be paid to me upon graduation from OSUP (which is basic and AIT all at once). However, I got screwed around by the Army and didn't get it until after I had been in a war zone for six months. After that, the first payment will be given to me on the beginning of the third year after I initially signed up. After that, it's once a year till its paid off. And I lose it if I voluntarily change my MOS and/or join the ROTC in college or go to OCS. If you're in a war zone and you're re-upping, you get it fairly quickly (in a matter of days) and there isn't any income tax on it. Just remember, that contract isn't to protect or help you. It's there for the Army. To them, you're just a piece of equipment.

There is no average, as it depends on what MOS you get into. You will receive your enlistment bonus after successfully completing AIT.
