If I go on it, what should I expect

nope it's a bad diet.. failure rate is high, most who try it long term get heart disorders, high cholesterol and circulatory problems.

if you stop your weight will double.

try the food pyramid diet.. it's old fashioned... it's an easy reference and much, MUCH healthier and long term effects are endless and you'll feel much better.

don't do atkins, i seen too many screw themselves up real bad from it. worst cases were a woman who had no real weight issues try it and then stop the program and put on a whopping 200lbs!!!!

another was a man in his 40s, he stayed on it long term, bad cholesterol (430 was his lipid count) and he had a moderate heart attack, along with weight gain of 100lbs.

last but not least another male 30s, nearly died of a stroke after being on it for a period of time.

don't do it. just stick with the basics.. it's easier, you don't have to cut anything from your diet.. moderation is the key.. calories is what makes you FAT not carbs... (you need carbs or ELSE!) and it's very well balanced and you get all the foods you'll ever need much variety too.

OH and exercise, take those stairs and ride that bike whenever you can.

and walk walk walk.. and keep your hydration up to a reasonable level with water, fresh juice... so on.

cut down on soda, fast food, processed/packaged foods.. stay away from foods saturated in chemicals and additives to preserve it for long shelf life.. that stuff is inert material and one of the biggest factors to stubborn weight gain.

the fresher the food the more energy and mineral packed it is ...
you need that more than anything.

remember to sweat as often as you can to.. that also helps remove toxins.. that also helps speed up metabolism.

watch those calories but also don't starve yourself or limit your variety of foods.

It works well....if you treat it as a lifestyle change, not as a diet.

The first week is the roughest, you are going through sugar withdrawal and most people experience symptoms from fatigue to headaches to flu-like symptoms. Once that's past you will feel better and most people find they have more energy than before.

If you follow the plan, concentrate on fresh whole foods and keep processed food "products" to a minimum, you will lose weight and improve your health.

Don't forget to exercise, it's an important part of Atkins.

This forum is a great source of info for people wanting to do Atkins or other low-carb plans.

Dr. Atkins weighed 275 when he died. Although he died fom a blow to the head in a fall, he had advanced heart disease. If you want to lose weight, make changes you can live with. My husband dropped 13 pounds in 3 weeks by eating cereal or grits for breakfast instead of eggs. He lost another 15 pounds in the next 2 weeks by walking the dog in the evenings. (about a mile walk). Now he's working on eating more vegetables and cutting his meat consumption.

I am not a big fan of 'diets' in general, believing in the old school rules, 'eat less, exercise more'.
That being said I have several friends who have tried this diet, all with success.

Best of luck.

If you can stick to it - yea, it works well and fast. The theory is simple - if you don't have any carbs your body is forced to burn stored fat. Personally, I get sick, sick, sick of meat/eggs/cheese/veggies in about 2 days - and I love fruit, which you can't have much of.

I did it once for two weeks and lost 9lbs. A friend and his wife - who both love eggs and beef - stayed on it for a long time and probably both lost 40-50 lbs and have kept it off for years.

It is a great diet, my girl started with just doing away with the sweets and now she just eats meats, fish, and lots of chicken, and some veggies. it was hard on her the first couple of days but now she's just used to it.

It works very well. The biggest problem is not eating carbs during the first phase, but if you follow the book you will drop the pounds .

You'll lose weight becuase you are losing water. It's not a good diet. Dr. Aktins actually died prematurely, some suggesting due to his diet. I think he just went a little overboard.
