First of all, please don't get a "teacup" Yorkie..this is not really a breed, it's merely yorkies bred so small they end up with dozens of serious health problems! You also might want to consider the fact that most toy breeds are really not a good choice to have for a child. Toy breeds can be quite fragile and easily injured with a child's rough play..I had a Yorkie for 15 yrs, she was my baby girl and an excellent dog, couldn't ask for anything better..but she wasn't fond of children..She never once bit or acted aggressive but always tried her best to get away from them..These dogs are so small that the feel they have to protect themselves when handled roughly..She did have the sweetest personality and was very responsive to anything i said or did..Yorkies are not "yippy" or "snappy" naturally..It's all in the way they are raised and trained..If not trained they will quickly take over the house and become little tyrants..But, hey, so will any dog! Anyways-your best bet would be to choose something a little bigger and tougher..maybe a mix from the shelter?

teacup dogs are more likely to have tons of internal problems. Often bad livers and such. Also yorkies bark alot and have tons of fur. Are you willing to deal with it? How about getting gum stuck in the fur?

A normal sized yorkie will be healthier. Good breeders know better than to breed down to such a small size. Dont buy from a breeder that does so. For a 6 year old....a pappy (pappilon) would be a good dog. Sure they have fur but not as much. A basenji would also be good since they dont really bark at all (they yodel every now and then) and have short fur yet are tiny but are a sighthound and might chase.

I love yorkies, I think they are super cute, but they require a lot of grooming. Daily brushing is recommended and probably monthly grooming. Yorkies can be mean or nippy, but it really depends on the dog. You could go to a local shelter and see if there are any dogs or puppies that seem to interact well with you and your daughter. I saw someone recommend Bichons, those are great dogs. Really smart, hypoallergenic and they don't shed. They also require regular grooming though. Pugs are really cute, mellow and low maintenance. Poodle are good pets too, but again grooming is needed.

The best kind of dog you can get for anybody is a labrador retriever. They are very friendly to everyone and they love kids. They are easy to train and they actually like training. Female dogs are usually mellower so that would probably be a better choice. Most small dogs are a lot harder to maintain (like they need to be groomed a lot), and they are picky. Also labs are not a very big dog so they can be indoors or outdoors.

Not a good idea for a 6yr.old.
These dogs can jump off the sofa and break a leg.

you may want to get a fairly timid dog, as your daughter is only 6... i've noticed that yorkies and other small breeds are yappy and a bit hyper-active...
