I am also in the program. If you go to Yahoo Groups and do a search for Alcoholics Anonymous it will give you a list. Choose one that suits your needs. Anyone that calls AA a cult just doesn't get it. I am not religious myself but I am spiritual. I do not call my higher power god. What works for some, isn't for everyone. Keep going on your journey through recovery!

Any group that tells me I will die if I leave is a cult.

This checklist came from a cult awareness group:
1. The group says you are damned without them.
2. The group predicts dire consequences to the member if they leave.
3. A member is encouraged not to interact with outsiders or family members who are not part of the group.
4. The group is uniquely saved and all outsiders are unsaved who need to be saved.
5. Questioning is discouraged.
6. You must confess your sins to the cult. There are no secrets from the cult.
7. You are encouraged to daily study of cult literature.
8. The cult becomes the center of your life.
9. The group encourages daily worship to the exclusion of all other life activities.

And this is all about AA being a cult:

You want God, join a church. Why is it the God of AA cannot CURE alcoholism, merely grant a daily reprieve? The God I was brought up with could raise the dead. Sounds like a wimpy god to me.

I think you will find that most of the people that call AA a cult, know AA quite well. That is where I formed my opinion of it. If you can step back and look at it objectively, you will see how silly much of what goes on there is. If you want to quit drinking, quit. If you want to find God, go to church. Do you really believe that alcohol is cunning, powerful and baffling?

>The correct answer (above) is "Alcoholics Anonymous".

Next time you ask a question, be careful to not ask it in "Religion and Spirituality"...the gospel spouters come scuttling out like cockroaches fighting over an old doughnut.

If a person is really asking a serious question they deserve better than that. Good luck.<

12 step recovery is everywhere. It is usually associated with alcoholics but is now also for narcotics and more. Look in the phone book for AA and they will find a support group near you.

Hello,
I agree with the post above raysny http://orange-papers.org/orange-cult has the facts behind all 12 step movements. They are all god based. They are all anti intellectual.

That doesn't exist any were, it is a cult. Try reading this than ask me, for I can help you through my Lord Jesus Christ:

Isaiah 50:6-8 (New King James Version)

6 I gave My back to those who struck Me,
And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard;
I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.
7 “ For the Lord GOD will help Me;
Therefore I will not be disgraced;
Therefore I have set My face like a flint,
And I know that I will not be ashamed.
8 He is near who justifies Me;
Who will contend with Me?
Let us stand together.
Who is My adversary?
Let him come near Me.
