Are there any background checks for American citizens visiting Canada? I have a court date in a few months for a misdemeanor marijuana charge and I am thinking about visiting Canada with some friends during my month off from college over winter break. Do they look that kind of stuff up, and if so, would I be unelgible to cross the border? I visited Mexico a couple of years back by (legally) walking over the border at Tijuana and nobody even checks you when you cross over, there were no guards or anything, only when you're trying to get back in to America do they do a check. Is it the same for Canada? I plan to do the same for my trip to Canada, visit a border city and just walk over the border.

ignore with regard to the Q guy, he`s speaking by his hat. Being an American does no longer provide you with any part, on your software to come back to Canada, as a Immigrant. we are looking for professionals, who've a school 4 365 days degree, in a self-discipline that we want the following in Canada. which incorporates Engineers, clinical docs, commercial pilots, and Registered Nurses. nutrients service.... no longer a risk. we've more desirable than sufficient Canadian voters who can do this kind of work. Take a passport.
That is the best advice I can give you. It isn't required (you can have your birth cert and state issued id) but it is definately faster at the crossings. They will have access to your files (just like the police do when they pull you over). Getting into Canada shouldn't be a problem, but they may pull you over crossing back into the US and do a search of your belongings and your vehicle if they suspect you may have any illegal substances with you. Go luck, have fun and be safe!

Based on my own experience in crossing the border, I'd say there is a 25-35% probabilty you will be denied entry.

I went there by bus and when I rode straight thru they checked all the luggage. But the other time I got off the bus at Buffalo and my Canadian friend picked me up there and we drove thru they didn't check anything. They DID ask to see my drivers license and birth certificate ( a copy of it.)
