I all of sudden for a few days have had terrible static, I'm wondering if anyone has had that problem and what was causing it.

Was it the phone companies problem, or a problem in your house wiring.

Clearly, phone company problem.

Some years ago, my static problems occurred after it rained outside, and would persist for 2-3 days while it was drying out. I knew it was a grounding issue w/ the line at the binding post up on the telephone pole, but the lineguys would never get to my location in time to see the problem. The static would be gone by the time the linemen would come around to my block.

Worse, they'd blame my inside wiring for the problem, and I'd shoot back that I'd worked for the phone company in the past, that I installed the inside wiring and tested it myself and there's no static problem, and that at the gray interface box I'd hear the static. Arrg!!!

In the meantime, I'd be unable to dialup my internet provider because the static would be impossible for the modems to overcome.

I finally talked to 611 and demanded that someone come out within 24 hrs or the next customer service survey will come back w/ all 1's (poor service). They came out, found the loose wire, which also happened to be touching another phone line causing crosstalk, and covered the binding posts properly.

If you drop your phone a lot, then it can cause static. Also, if you have dust in the phone jack, that can do it too. Sometimes water or moisture can get into the outside box.

There could be a problem with the outside line.

This is a common problem with some telco interfaces. If you have one of the newer (last 10 or so yrs) clam shell boxes, you can open your side, un-plug the short black lead and plug an ordinary phone in to the socket. If you still have the noise, the problem is on their end. If you have one of the older boxes, there are two lightning arresters screwed in at the bottom of the box. Un-screw them., one at a time, and see if the noise goes away. If so, one of them has "whiskers" shorting to the common (ground) and has to be replaced. That too is the phone co's job.

Static on your telephone line is brought about with the help of unfastened or broken wiring, defective digital kit or broken carbon protectors. given which you have stated that the subject happens once you turn telephones you may in all possibility rule out the telephones (the digital kit at your end of the telephone line). the authentic try nonetheless must be to unplug all telephones and plug them in a single at at time to be certain if one telephone may well be inflicting the subject. utilising the comparable widespread working telephone, plug it in to each jack and see if between the jacks may well be inflicting the subject. If the subject persists with all jacks, then it is going to likely be as much as the telephone company to repair. If this befell after a thunderstorm, then the telephone line could have taken a lightnining strike and blown the carbon protectors. In any adventure the telephone company will ought to replace the protectors or fix the exterior wiring or replace the digital kit interior the telephone significant workplace. All you ought to do is do away with your telephones and interior wiring as a accessible rationalization for the static.

More than likely,it's in your interface (connection box) outside, unless it's JUST on one phone in your house, then probably the handset (the part you talk into). Call the phone company, they usually can do a wire check thru your phone, while you talk to them. Good luck!!
