I've always wondered who actually picks up the road kill from the highway. So many times I've seen a raccoon or possum smushed on the highway, only to see it removed later that day or the next. But, I never see anyone actually removing it, but it just seems to disappear. Who picks it up?

Actually no government officials, police, trashmen or DOT. The county contracts individuals to do this job. You or anyone can contract yourself out to the county and get paid to do this. They just require a long bed pickup or trailor, valid insurance and a drivers license.

In the city, it is classified under the city works department, or in some cases the Park Department employees. In Wisconsin the County DOT is in charge of removing them from highways, BUT since there's been massive budget cuts lately, a lot of counties have decided to just let nature take its course on the bodies, and let them rot.

Watching a dead deer decompose each day to and from work, is not a pretty sight.

In MD, the state contracts out such services to different contractors in each county or region. These contracts are regularly up for bid. The same holds true for most states with high degrees of roadkill.

wierd people who are hungry, people who collect roadkill skins, or the city who is in charge of that portion of the road. Maybe vulutures or eagles eat them.
