Bell's palsey is understood to be caused by herpetic inflammation within the 7th cranial nerve, also called the "facial nerve". This is a nerve that exits through the skull just behind the ear and then fans out across the cheek to bring fibers into the facial muscles. The inflammatory event is thought to occur within the bony canal through which the nerve travels. When the nerve is swollen enough, it pinches off its own blood supply and does damge to itself. This leads to facial paralysis because the 7th cranial nerve is a motor nerve.

Sensory nerve fibers to the face arrive by a completely different pathway. These are supplied by the 5th cranial nerve or "trigeminal nerve" which has 3 main branches which traverse through the deep mid-face and orbit (eye socket).

The trigeminal nerve is completely unrelated to the facial nerve, and does not share any anatomic relationship that would make it suffer along with the motor fibers when they are injured.

Numbness or sensory changes to the skin of the face is unrelated to Bell's palsey.

Interestingly, the 8th cranial nerve or auditory nerve, rides right alongside the 7th. It is very possible to have auditory changes along with Bell's palsey!

My friend had Bell's Palsy. He said, He had a temp and cold and went to sleep. But the next morning he woke up with numbness and paralysis on one side. If you are unsure please go get checked out. It may also be a sign of a stroke.

That isn't the only symptom, do you have any facial droop, does the left side of you mouth droop down when you smile? Stick out your tongue does it go to one side? My mother had this years ago, and her symptoms helped me diagnosis one of my patients in a nursing home. If you feel you have this, make an appointment to see a doctor. See the link below for more information on this.

Have you been drinking lots of caffeine? Or do you experience any anxiety attacks? Do you have asthma? That can also be a sign of these things.
