It means you don't have to exhaust yourself jumping through endless hoops to be saved. What you do is believe in Jesus Christ, repent of your sin, and confess Him as your savior.
I feel so sorry for people who think they have to work their way to heaven.

Saved by grace through faith (the whole phrase) means that there is nothing that you can do to earn your salvation. It is the unmerited favor of God that you can even be saved.

It means Jesus paid for my redemption, and I could never have earned it , it is only -by a disposition of God to show kindness or compassion to me (grace ) And, I am thankful He did.

Jesus did everything for us to goto Heaven, all we need to do now is accept him and surrender ourselves to his will, to make us fit for heaven.
We can't get to Heaven by feeding the poor all our lives, or being an evangelist, we can only get to Heaven through Jesus our saviour.
We need to be regenerated into a new creature, not a better creature.
