Rats and mice can carry rabies... if he ate a dead (or living) mouse or was bit (and there is a slim chance of other infection vectors) he could contract rabies.

If your pup was bit by a rapid animal (mouse, rat, bat, etc.) then, yes, it could get rabies. If you suspect rabies, look for bite marks on your pet and get him to a vet immediately. If you can find a dead mouse, rat, bat... around the house, take that in with your dog in case it was the suspect animal. Your vet can run tests on it to see if it was rabid.

Rabies is transmitted thru saliva. If bitten by a rabid animal then yes.

It is possible, not just from rabid rodents but also from mosquitoes and/or fleas which have first fed on a rabid animal...Take the puppy and have it immunised...for other dog illnesses too...like distemper etc
