I'm really interested in the concept of fasting to cleanse your body. Apparently, it can be extremely healthy if done in the right way. You let your body take care of itself and it'll be able to flush dead tissue/cells out and kind of purge impurities out.

However, my mother isn't too thrilled with the idea. I've definitely done the research on it, and really want to try a short, 5-day fast. How can I make it a little subtler that I'm fasting? Are there any good ways to hide the fact that I'm only drinking juices and water?

Thanks in advance! =)

Wow - I was just reading some of the first replies... thanks for all of your input. I guess I was assuming too much after I visited a few sites that supported fasting. Here's one that gives a good summarization of fasting, with doctors backing some of the details up. So... I shouldn't trust this source, as well as the six or seven other pages I visited?

I think I might try what pierson1952 suggested instead, thanks!

Oh yes - also, I have no intention of doing this to try and lose weight. In fact, I think fasting generally causes you to gain a little more weight from what you started with. So those of you with concerns about this turning into an eating disorder, don't worry. =)

Here's an excerpt from a site:

During a fast, a metamorphosis occurs. The body undergoes a tearing down and rebuilding of damaged materials. For this reason, fasting is famous for its ability to rejuvenate and give the body a more youthful tone. Why does fasting have such a powerful effect in healing the body? Fasting dissolves diseased cells in a systematic manner, leaving healthy tissue. The result is a thorough cleansing of the tube, membrane and cellular structures. There is a remarkable redistribution of nutrients in the fasting body. It hangs on to precious minerals and vitamins while catabolizing on old tissue, toxins and inferior materials.

You can do just as well for your body by eating the right foods. Fasting for 5 days is too extreme, and not healthy either. If you're looking for foods that will help to cleanse, do some homework online. Type in "foods that cleanse". Fasting is not necessary.

Fasting is very destructive. Your body literally begins to feed on itself. Fasting damages your liver and other body organs. Drinking only juices and water is extremely bad for you especially if you do this for 5 days.

The best way to cleanse your body is to develop a healthy diet and to follow it diligently.

The body does not flush out dead tissue/cells as you claim because of a fast. You did research? What qualifications do you have? Reading a lot on a subject does not always give you the correct idea. Your body needs nourishment daily in the right amounts.

It is extremely unhealthy to fast on only water for 5 days. Im not surprised your mother doesnt like the idea.

Fasting is depriving your body of essential micronutrients e.g. vitamins and minerals, which are needed for your body to function properly and depriving your body of macronutrients e.g. proteins, fats and carbs, which are essential. Not eating fibre will prevent your digestive system working properly.

Fasting would undermine your immune system due to lack of energy from food and generally have a negative effect of most of your organs.

If you eat a relatively healthy diet e.g. fruit and veg and balanced food, you dont need to help your body to flush out dead tissue and cells. Removing impurities and waste is one of the normal functions of your liver and kidneys and depriving them of food will prevent them for doing this, not increase the removal of impurities.

Regardless of the health problems, for the time you are fasting you will probably feel lethargic, be constipated, have no energy, have trouble sleeping and have headaches.

You should always be careful of information on the internet, especially about health. The information on that website is rubbish. Just ask your doctor how healthy fasting on only water for a week is. Hope this helps.

You won't be able to hide if you hang out with your mum on a regular basis. I would do some research on the kind of fasting that you are thinking of. Maybe for 3 days, but 5 days is extreme, you will feel pretty sick and it is very hard on your liver doing this, according to a Chinese acupuncurist that I have gone to. I would stick to a plain veggie and brown rice diet, alternating with purified water and juice without sugar in it. Pomegranite and pure cranberry juice is good. If you have a juicer, then juice veggies rather than fruit, except for lemon. Juicing organic beets are good for your liver. Juicing would be better than drinking fruit juice.

Don't hide indoors. If there is a window in whatever room you are in, open in quietly and sneak out,be sure to close it once you're free.Once you are outside, go to the closest corner store or library until your school would let out, then go home, and act like it was a normal day. Just be warned the school would call if you weren't called in!!!

Why not try with lunch first. Think you'll need at least some solid food for a start. when u are ready, then try out the 5 days juice & water .... Though it may be only 5 days , it will require a lot of determination!

THIS IS A BIG FAT LIE!!! There is no healthy fast. How can you call starving your body of nutrients healthy. The brain sends signals to the body telling it that you are depriving it of food and then the body tries to pull nutrients from the cells that you have stored.
i don think that you will be able to hide it for long because your hair will start to fall out, you will have more breakouts. ITS JUST NOT HEALTHY!!!

CLEANSING BODY does not = EATING DISORDER...PPL STFU.

Good idea. I did this, and it worked wonders...My mom didn't like it either (I'm only 16) so for the short 3 to 5 days I "slept over" at a friends, then had dinner and stuff at other friend's houses. If you don't have ten million friends, you could just "eat" at the one friend's house and say you were elsewhere...

Otherwise just say you really don't feel well and don't feel like eating.

BTW, a couple of people who answered before me on this don't know crap. A fast to cleanse the body is much different than doing it to lose weight. Don't listen to them. And why listen to your mom if she can't even understand the concept of making the body more healthy this way?

Take a tip from someone who knows,
It may start as just a "fast" but before you know it, it could turn into something much more serious. My advice listen to your mom. Your family will find out no matter how much you try to hide it (I know, trust me) Just explain to your mom what you plan on doing and why...and then let it be up to her.
