I agree, don't listen to Todd, he's the equivalent of the village idiot.

Do not talk to them on the phone, do everything in writing - papertrail !!!

Send them a debt validation letter. Send it certified mail return receipt.
If this is the first time you have heard from them, either by phone or mail, as long as you send a debt validation letter "within 30" days from first contact, they cannot "legally" continue to collect the debt (which includes filing suit) until they validate with you.

They had 5 days to send you something in writing after that phone call. If they did not send you anything in writing it is a violation.

Make a log about this. Write down everything that was said in that conversation, including names if you remember them. Write down the day that they called etc., etc., etc. Don't write down what wasn't said !!! Stick to exactly what you remember was said.
If they do happen to sue and you request all records from them, and they have a tape of the conversation in those records, the judge will not look kindly at you if you had lied about what was said.

Pull your reports and see if they are reporting, and if they are, what violations are on it (I'm sure there are violations, there usually is)

The statute of limitations for collecting in your state is 6 years.

Keep that log of all violations that they commit. If they should sue then you may have plenty of violations to hit them with counterclaims. (and the way collectors usually violate, you would probably have more on them, dollar wise, then they would be suing you for- since "every" violation they commit can mean up to $1000 for you)

Check out the site I've listed. Start reading in the newbie forum and then in the credit forum. Learn your rights in dealing with them. Learn what constitutes a debt validation letter etc.

Be sure to send that debt validation letter out before the 30 days expires.

Scared don't be scared of these people this is what they do for a living. Especially if they are form Michigan alot of us are A-- Holes really (me not included). These people buy these old account for pennies on the dollar and if they can get u to give them any money they get a cut of it. There is nothing other then hurt your credit that these jerks can do to u really.

YES YOU ARE GETTING SUED, I HAVE HEARD OF THESE GUYS AND THEY HOLD UP TO THERE WORD.
YOU SHOLD OF CALLED HIM BACK AT LEAST.
WHY DID YOU NOT PAY YOUR RESPONSIBILITY FIRST OF ALL NOW YOU ARE IN THIS MESS AND YOU ARE CRYING OVER YOU PROBLEM TO EVERYONE ELSE.
WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN THEY WILL MORE THAN LIKELY SUE YOU FOR 5K AND IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY THERE YOU COULD FACE JAIL TIME FOR FRAUD. NOW CALL THEM BACK UP AND OFFER THEN A 20-30 DOLLAR MONTHLY PAYMENT.
