If you want to gain weight-consume more fat-not protein. Protein is used for weight loss unless you consume really large quantities. This is only recommended for body builders. If you really want to do this-go to a health food store and buy amino acid powder to mix into milk.

The answer really depends on if you are weight training. To be honest, unless you want to gain "bad" weight (ie: get fat), you can only gain healthy weight by working out along with the proper protein supplementation. Consider the fact that muscles weigh more than fat, so you can actually burn fat yet gain "good" weight by gaining muscle size. If working out, the best way to grow is to have at least 1 gram of protein for each pound of body weight. If you work out very hard at the gym, you can even increase this to 1.5 grams per pound. Be sure to spread this out as much as possible, as your body cannot digest more than 50 grams of protein or so at one time. Protein shakes will help a lot since most people can't eat enough protein from just real food to get enough protein if they are weight training.
