Photo plus and photo filtre are good for photo editing.
Picasa does basic editing, and is a great organizer.

I agree with Sam, so "what he said!" But The Gimp is complicated.
Google offers a more simple photo edit program for free, http://picasa.google.com/
You seem to be more interested in speed and whistles rather than substance. Picasa is oriented to a more casual photo album user.
For the fewest hassles, you should definitely avoid "trialware" solutions, and actively seek out open source software. GNU/Linux/FOSS has arrived and will run circles around proprietary software!

The GIMP is most like Photoshop. I'm not crazy about it, but many people like it.
