I heard that there is some CB antennas that have larger coils in the base in place of using a long antenna. Is this true? I seen some that come in different colors that are really short with massive coils. Anyone use these? By the way my radio is 12 watts.

Base load antennas are okay, but if you could find center load antenna, you will find your output signal would be much better.

You will, of course, have to properly tune your SWR to get the most optimal signal.

I've have to go with Matt's answer too I've a 9’whip antenna on the bed of the truck. And get good range
I know some few other c.b.ers that have
WILSON 1000 RF TOP MNT ANT/62 WHIP
62" Roof Mount Antenna 3000 Watts PEP 26 MHz to 30 Mhz ,Wilson 5000 Magnetic Mount
62" Magnet Mount Antenna,5000 Watts PEP on AM,20000 Watts PEP on SSB, low loss coil des,26 MHz to 30 MHz
And do just fine with there antenna choices. If you think about it there’s only so of signal that will go out and that you can hear coming in. And you moving around. Find the highest point or hill in town and you’ll have the chance of be the loudest than the most of the c.b.ers. The antenna’s that I’ve have seen that have thick base coil are mostly the fat antenna, usually on back of suburban carrying more power than radio station. If don’t mind the height stay with it. Or find antenna that will cover watts pep.

To perform correctly an antenna has to be certain multiples of the wave length of the frequency. In CB, the wave length is about 11 meters, or around 34 feet. Even a quarter wave antenna (a common length) would be about 7.5 feet long. This is not practical in a lot of situations, such as on a vehicle. The coil in an antenna is a matching device. It allows the use of a shorter antenna while maintaining a good match for the transmitter. However, they don't perform quite as well as a longer antenna, especially for receiving.

I use to have a 108 inch whip on my car . My signals gets out allot farther and I pick up allot more signals. I didn't need any coils.
Shorter the antenna, less distance you get. Less signal to pick up.
The reason for shorter antennas to have coils is to keep the radio transmitter from burning out and balance out the signal.
If your radio output is 12 watts then is eligible unless it's in SSB.
