The fastest (highest top speed) is the 1988 300ZX Turbo with a top speed of 157mph. The 90s models Twin Turbos were governed at 155mph. The quickest (fastest accelerating) is the 1990 - 1996 300ZX Twin Turbo with a quarter mile time of 13.8 seconds. The 350Z is only does 14.1 seconds in the quarter mile and has a top speed of 156mph.
As for which one would i suggest? how much money do you have and how much patience do you have? The Z31 (84-88) can be made very nasty 400-500hp with around 4000 dollars and are much much easier to work on than the others. The Z32 which is the 90-96 are monsters, and can be very nasty also 600+ hp. depending on your wallet, but if you ever see on of these cars look in the engine bay. you'll see what i mean. there is about 3 inches between the strut towers and the heads. a twin throttle body intake that spans the entire width of the engine makes spark plugs fun! the 350Z is beautiful and can be quite vicious also but at 27,000 for a base model you'd be better off getting a Z31 or Z32, you can get a nice Z31 for 2500 to 3500 bucks and a nice Z32 for 10,000 or so. keep in mind I'm referring to the turbo versions too not the NA ones.

1990 - 1996 Twin Turbos were the fastest. Suggestion: Find a TT zx from 90-96 that is in good condition with low miles. Any TT from 90-96 is going to be fast. 90-96 Twin turbo comes with 300hp stock and the Naturally Aspirated (non-turbo) 90-96 comes with 222hp stock. I personally own a 1990 non-turbo ZX and even with no turbo its pretty damn fast. Good luck finding a cheap Twin turbo that is in good working order and looks good.

Wooohooo!! Perfect question for me! As for the fastest as in quarter mile and acceleration the 1990-1996 twintubo styles are the fastest. Top speed They went155 mph stock. I believe the new 350z does 155 mph also. I would also like to point out that the 1990-1996 slick top (without t-tops) is about 200 lbs lighter too.

I really would not count out the the earlier 300zx turbo (Z31). If you get a good rebuild on one and upgrade some things, i.e. turbo, injectors, fuel pump etc. they can be pretty fast cars to. And they are lighter than the Z32 twin turbo. And if you are up for it the turbo 280zx turbo can take some boosting too!!

Depends, I read the best year is the later years 92-93 but they're supposed to be hard to find. Any year from '89 up pretty much goes the same speed but there are other problems in earlier years.

You have already gotten a lot of good advice. Now what you need to know is the "care and feeding" of turbocharged cars.
You need to learn how to take care of one of these cars if you plan to buy one because you can't just treat it like a normally aspirated car.
