they need nothing. they don't use any external matter for nesting. you have to give them a wood box and they gnaw it and they place excelsior in floor of box

I have a pair who are nesting now...and will again in spring. They do need a "nesting box" with a lid (for privacy and to keep the eggs warm and safe) and , if you can't buy nesting material, try paper cut into strips (not color ads or comics) or cotton balls. My birds like it all! Put it on top of the box, and they will roll it in their beaks and take it in when it's "just right"...and it's the female who will tell the male when it is "just right"...kind of like people! Good luck!

The ideal times of the year to breed birds are spring and fall. They will naturally do this by the position of the sun in the sky, so make sure they have access to natural light. The nesting materials I have found to work best for lovebirds are newspapers (with soy ink so it won't kill them) that your birds can shred themselves and clean wood shavings. The placement of the materials doesn't matter as long as the birds have easy access to it.

Good luck

Give them newspapers. They will make their own nesting material out of it. I tried giving my cockatoos nice store-bought nesting material and they just threw it out of the nesting box.
