The border's total length is 1,951 miles (3,141 km), according to figures given by the International Boundary and Water Commission.[1] It is the most frequently crossed international border in the world, with some 350 million people crossing (legally) every year.[2]

Can you imagine 350 million people legally crossing every year --

20 years ago I was walking across the bridge over the Rio Grande river from Laredo, TX to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico with my son. He said, "Dad, do people ever swim across river?"

I said, "Not here, Son. Too many people watching. But they might out in the country someplace."

"No, Dad, just look over THERE""

I saw half a dozen people, belongings on their head and just walking across to the US at the largest crossing on any US border.

There are hundreds of border guards working at that location, checking IDs and accents. Running drivers' licenses against the 'wanted lists' and asking plenty of questions. Not one of them was looking right under their nose!

By the U.S. Border Patrol, that is under Immigration. They drive around at day and night in trucks and jeeps that are a light green color. U.S. Customs officers are also cross trained in immigration department laws.
