I'm not in Alabama, but try this.
When my husband and I called around asking quotes, we kept getting really high numbers, $300+. Then we tried a bakery and just asked about a cake. We did not use the word wedding. They told us $90 for the same thing we got quoted $300 on.
All I can say is WTF makes a wedding cake more expensive than a normal one. At $90 we got the cake we wanted, in the flavors we wanted, and the decorations we wanted. It was perfect, and we spent the money on other stuff instead of a overpriced cake.

Okay, so, this is sort of cheating, but here's how my Honey and I did it for CHEAP:

We had the top two layers made "normally," and the bottom two layers were frosted foam. None of the guests could tell the difference--and some bakers won't fess up that they can do that, but ALL of them do. We saved the top for our first anniversary (i know it won't taste good, but here's to tradition), we "cut" the second layer for the photographer, and most of the people had their piece from a sheet cake iced the same way.

If you're having your cake wisked away and cut, no one will know. If you are using it as part of a display (as we were), tell a few good friends to spread the "idea" that "there were more guests than originally planned for, and you and your husband wanted them to have plenty of cake to enjoy!"

Serve from the sheet cake "first," and if there is any leftover, "Aww, too bad." :) It's MUCH cheaper than 4 tiers!

\Yes go to the nearest store that has ready made cakes, get some trimmings then find someone to stick them on for you it will save you so much more than you thought. In England the cakes would cost £300.00 or more but I could do what I just said for about £50.00 and have done it

Call around to different bakeries. Even Sams club and some grocery store bakeries do them. Good luck.
