The question of how a kid can't focus is really an answer of chain effects after many unfair judgments.

the reason: Most of the time a kid can't focus is because she/he lacks interest in that topic. She/he lacks interest in it can be because of many reasons, but 9 out of 10 is because the lack of confidence in that topic. And lack of confidence is simple cause by the lack of successful feelings.

help: Most kids these days go the doctor because of unable to focus on a few things and come home with diagnosis of ADD. !GUESS WHAT! most of them do not have ADD. We're more dealing of an habit issue than a mental medical condition. The fact is that you do not have to go to a doctor to find out if you're kid really has ADD. Just simply watch them doing something they enjoy, such as watching TV for hours or playing games for a whole night or playing sports for a period of time. If they are able to remain the same task for about 20 minutes then the chances of having real ADD is almost none. You can always go to the doctor and seek for help. But really... what is the doctor going to do if she/he is diagnosis with ADD?

The bottom line is no matter if or if not the kid has the "real" ADD you should must help her/him develop a successful feelings to gain confidence towards any task in school or outside of school. Once you break the habit of fearing or discomfort from a certain topic she/he will slowly get better at it by tackling the issue instead of ignoring it. It's not something that can be done over night, just like all bad habits.

I haven't heard of any device or helmet but there are things you can try:
Try limiting the distractions in the child's environment
Sit the child near the teacher

If the student has a diagnosis of ADD or ADHD he or she may be able to get on a 504 plan at school or they may qualify for special education services under the category of Health Impaired. A diagnosis of ADD or ADHD isn't enough to qualify for special education, there also has to be an adverse educational impact and a need for specially designed instruction. This is something you can discuss with your child's teacher and you can ask to speak with the school psychologist at your child's school. The school psychologist can explain your options to you.

Chewing gum helps kids to organize their thoughts and focus, believe it or not. Not every kid that has trouble focusing has ADD; some kids have other sensory issues. Decrease overstimulation by turning lights low, playing calming music, keeping wall decorations to a non-distractible level, etc. Keep activities to a short enough time, based on developmental ages of the kids, and alternate sitting/quiet activities with movement activities.
