Plant colorful flowers that grow well in your area. You could use small to large planters placed threw out. Also take good care of your grass so that its not full of weeds. Depending on your finances purchase a nice tree. Japenese cherry trees are beautiful, but expensive. Try a nice white bench. Swings and hammocks are great to lay on. Stones and ponds are nice to. Go w/ a theme. Like your at the beach or traveling back in time when you walk into your yard. Whatever helps you relax. Goodluck! Also try hgtv.com-they have that show about creating backyards that are to die for. And I've seen episodes w/ all diffenent sized yards.

do you want a specific theme?I think bamboo would be nice with a bird bath. You can have a butterfly garden specifically for butterflies. You can have a little "zen garden" by buying a kitty litter box and filling it with sand from the beach and add stones and a piece of bamboo. This and some flowers is what you can do if you're on a budget. If you have all the money you need plant a few rose bushes here and there along with a baby tree.Have a nice relaxing pond with fish in it.You could have stepping stones leading to an arbor covered in flowers with a wooden bench under it for you to sit and relax.Good luck.

A small herb garden is always pleasant. It lifts your spirits the second you smell it and of course compliments your cooking and backyard grilling. Rosemary, oregano, sweet basil, thyme, purple sage, and maybe even something like Lavendar to off-set the smell a bit. Use some miniature iris and something like jackrabbit garden ornaments. This is a cheap and simple way to dress up your back yard. Place an antique wooden bench nearby and place a slate stone path from there to your back door. A more elaborate approach might include a small fountain or waterfall incorporated into that. (more expensive, but definitely worth it).

Have you thought about a Gazebo? A gazebo can give you just about any look you are going for in a backyard since there are so many types to choose from. Gazebos come in all shapes, sizes, and styles. A garden gazebo would be cute - you could create a nice flower garden and have the gazebo as the centerpiece. A hot tub or spa gazebo could also look nice, and it would provide you with a great place to relax as well. You can check out this awesome website that helped me learn more about gazebos: http://www.need-info.com/gazebo

Make a small flower garden, using smooth, curving lines as a border. Don't make straight edge gardens, they're boring. Put a small flowering tree offset from the center, then a decorative rock or piece of driftwood. Then just scatter a few flowers that you like in any bare spot. Change your flowers each year, changing the color tone. Mine has red and white right now. Last year was purple and pink.

Try a fire pit. they sell them at homedepot. I know people usually get patio furniture for their yards but I think that a bench or a chase (w/ waterproof material) and lots of pillows. You can also have speakers mounted outside so you can enjoy some nice music while relaxing. Not to loud you may disturb your neighbors. Also fountains are really calming. and a bunch of candles!!
Tiki torches are awesome also.
And their great for bugs.

If you want a nice place to relax, then why not go with the traditional flowers, grass, and trees. A bird feeder to attract birds and flowers to attract butterflies. This is not original or cute, but you can't beat it for a nice relaxing spot to unwind.

A lilly pond, with gold fish in it, they are great to relax around. Planting creeping cardinals makes a pretty landscape too.
