Those are some of the sociological and psychological reasons that come to mind. I'm not sure if you were looking for purely physiological reasons or not.

1. they are bored, my kids do this all the time.
2. cause they are simpily hungary
3. they are depressed
4. its a party and food is offered even though you not hungary its polite to have at least one piece of cake and a couple of party pies.
5. it looked good at the time.
