1. They have a rich, deep history.
2. They are American allies.
3. They are a democracy which, like the USA, allows freedom of speech, freedom of religion and basic human rights.
4. They gave us "The Beatles".
5. They have wonderful accents (Of course, we are the ones with the accents when we visit them).

Seriously though, I think that your point is that they are not the great empire that they once were and nobody can argue with that. But think of this. Even after a US president completes his term in office, he is still addressed as "Mr. President". When a Mayor or Judge complete their time in office, they are addressed as "Mr. Mayor", "Madam Mayor, or "Your Honor".

The British have done a lot of good for the world (yes, there have been mistakes, too) but I believe that our friends in the UK Deserve the honorary title of Great Britain.

As someone else said the Great bit is to distinguish us from Bretagne in France, which at one time was ruled by us, we are known as Grande Bretagne. So it's all about geographical/ geological factors, and nothing at all to do with what we might have achieved in the past. So we can call our home land Great Britain without being accused of being big-headed.

Great Britain's called Great Britain to distinguish it from Britain (Bretton) in France, and dates back to the time when there were native Brittons settling in northern France (Bretton has it's own language, which is very similar to Cornish and Welsh).

So, it's Great as in Big, not Great as in Fantastic.

Probably not the kind of answer you were looking for, but it's true!

What ARE you referring to? Britain is a great country because we can vote for who represents us, we can have freedom of expression, the liberty to choose our own careers, a lasting peace and prosperity, a great education system, a free health system, fresh running water, food in the shops, a bustling vibrant economy. As Nationals we enjoy all of this. So. What DO you mean?

Britain gave the world the most elegant, expressive and extensive (600,000 words in a basic vocabulary!) language the world has ever seen.

Of course, Britain also gave us mushy peas.

Oh, well.

sorry, but england is still great. the government is awful...maggie thatcher in drag...thats our tony.. i hate the woman with a vengeance, but at least she had some balls... we are teh 4th most powerful nation on the planet, we ran the world for hundreds fo years, and successive governments have squandered it, and given it away. time to vote with our pencils.

im a socialist...and i cry when i see whats become of this great land...this empire. we won wars collectively, we developed war as the only real team building exercise their is..and we were good at..the best... and how easily we forget our past, how readily the lessons learned in our infancy as a nation state are forgotten. i say shame on you who mock, for each of you have supped from the state nipple..and suddenly the taste sours in your mouth...as it sours for us all. we gag on the diet of sour intention and misdirected allegiance, as our rights as subjects of hte crown are eroded and given away cheap.

the world makes a mistake in seeing us as shopkeepers and buffons, blundering from pillar to post in our drunken excesses... yet this country sleeps, dozing on a summers afternoon watching the cricket... wake us not nor disturb our slumber... or discover how we got our number.

My husband is British...... I love the accent, the vocabulary, the mannerisms, the food (I know, weird), most of the Governmental powers, not bothered by the Royals........ that's what I can think of right now.

Nothing. Britain WAS great at one time, and now they've fallen to the point where paranoia grips the entire country. They still think they're great, but in reality, they're lower than they were before.
