Hi there, I've been told that ME is one of the worst Operating System ever. So I'll probably upgrade it to XP. How to I go around doing it so that all my files, programs and adjustments will not be changed? Thank you and god bless! =)

Can it be done? Yes. Will it work well... odds are no. You can save yourself a lot of time and effort by just backing up your data and installing XP fresh. Me and XP are based on very different technology - Upgrading an Me machine to an XP machine can be like trying to put a jet engine into a World War I bi-plane.

The problem is because of the differences in Technology and the software used on Me, you can end up causing yourself MANY problems by upgrading. Strange unexplained crashes. Some things not working right or at all. Weirdisms where, for example, you can't defrag your hard drive.

Now I'm not saying these problems WILL happen. But in 12 years of professional experience, I can tell you that they happen WAY too often - when upgrading from a 9x Operating System (which Me is) to an NT based operating system (which XP is).

One other thing to consider - your computer NEEDS RAM. If your computer doesn't have at the absolute MINIMUM 256 MB of RAM, don't do it. Frankly, I recommend to all my clients whenever they get a machine and to all my new clients whenever I find a machine with less, you WANT 512 MB of RAM... MAYBE more depending on exactly what you do with the computer. The processor (CPU), while important, is NOT as important as the RAM. I run XP fine on a 7 year old laptop and on several 8 year old desktops with 400 MHz CPUs - the key is, I have 512 MB of RAM in each system.

I was told ME was bad to but I have been using it awhile and it is very stable. Most peoples computers don't meet the hardware requirements for the operating system. Beware though, make sure your pc meets the hardware requirements for Windows XP or you will have more problems.

Put the install CD for XP in the CD drive. Windows will walk you through installing it.
