The Marines who have answered you are the best answers here. I agree with the guy who said that your a** belongs to the Corps. THAT IS SO TRUE!!!!! LOL You will hate it and love it all in the same day, 15 times a day probably.

The person who said to get in the habit of saying everything with the first word as "sir" and the last word as "sir" is right also. That is pretty easy after a day or so, but the one that will save you some "digging" time on the quarterdeck is to start speaking like Bob Dole - ALWAYS speak in the third person; i.e. - in boot camp there are no I's or me's or you's or him's, there is "this recruit" (or private in third battalion at Parris Island), "that recruit", "the drill instructor.." etc., I'm sure you get the idea. That was one of the hardest things. The other is to get the lingo down before you get there.

There are no walls, there are bulkheads. There are no stairs, there are ladderwells. There are no water fountains, they're scuttlebutts, etc. Learn it and try talking to everyone that way before you get there, you can undo it later. Oh, yeah, the bathroom, because you WILL NOT go if you screw it up, is the head and if you memorize only one, memorize that one.

Good Luck, recruit and if you make it, you'll be changed for life. Oohrah!! LOL

Do it for God, Country, and Corps!

For the first 30 days all you will do is pushups, situps, and running. I would prepare by working out harder than you ever have, walking and running at least 5-6 miles a day, this will put you at or near the top of the unit. Start eating and going to the bathroom quickly and on command, and be as anal as you can be by keeping everything neat and clean. Prepare for assault on your mind and learn to enjoy pain and being yelled at, shave your head before boot.

Seriously, get up at 4 am every morning and run 4 miles while holding about 10 lbs in your hands. Do push ups until you drop and keep doing them everyday. Find some place to do chin ups until you can't do them any more and do this every day. Physical exercises is the primary key for Basic Training.

Hope you don't smoke.
Hope you like running and lots of it.
Hope you like getting up early in the mornings.
Hope you like someone in your face all the time trying to piss you off.
Hope you like dropping down cause you will do a lot of that.
When the world **** hits the fan you can be one of the first to expect to go!
Aint no easy duty then bro.
With the marine Corps. the casulty rate is always high.

Good Luck!
Wish ya well.
Always have a high respect for all men and women in uniform.

Work out like monster mad, but don't injure yourself. By the time you leave you should be able to do 50 good push ups in a row without stopping, do 10 good pull-ups, and run 3 miles in less than 20 minutes. And do other exercises, build up your endurance.

I don't often get the opportunity to write to a Hero. An entire country is proud of you. Be safe and good luck.

start running now, nothing will fully prepare you, even if you are in the best of shape they will wear you out and exhaust you both mentally and physically, just know there is a reason for everything you go through there no matter hor ridiculous it seems and you will be able to look back and laugh at some of the things when you are out of basic! good luck.

If you're not in shape, they'll do that for you. I like what one of the other ones said "keep you're mouth shut". They'll yell at you and get in your head all day, just keep your mouth shut and respect those that are above you. My cousin is a Marine and he said basic training was quite the experience. Good luck!
