I live in CA and went to the DMV and they said that it's impossible to look up without knowing the plate number. Specifically, he is a truck driver and I know he has at least one truck. How can I get the title to the truck and then sell it? The DMV suggested that I contact the lien owner of the truck, though I'm not sure who that is? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

If there is a lien holder then you will not be able to sell it anyways. That means that the truck is financed and the finance company currently holds the title. If it is sold then it will have to go through them, they get their money and give the owner the remaining balance. Why are you trying to do this without him knowing though? He should be able to tell you all the information you need but it sounds like you don't want him to know what is going on. I guess the DMV is trying to protect his privacy, maybe a more specific Power of Attorney is needed from your friend.

The people at DMV told you a load of bull. You can pull up all the vehicles registered to a person if you have their name and DOB or SSN.
I don't know if a power of attorney gives you the authority to get that information though.

Are you trying to do this without his knowledge and consent? If so, that's not right! If he's ok with it, wouldn't he know his tag number or be able to tell you where the title is?
