I use it as a substitute for laughter. Is this something to be worried about?

It is perfectly ok to use computer slang or any type of slang when talking to people who understand what you are trying to say.

Having said that, I think the problem here is a much profound one that is you got used to declaring "lol"s even when you are not at all laughing when chatting online just because you thought it was appropriate to the situation or to be polite or to implicate that you are joking or what ever. In that case your use of "lol" is either mistaken or misunderstood or you are simply dishonest.

If you really feel like laughing when talking for real you won't have a chance to pronounce the sound "lol" since you'd be too busy actually laughing.

lol (great im doing that too) rotfl (ok maybe not) :) <-- now I really mean that.

It just means that you're on the comp too much! I quit turning on my laptop for a while once I started SAYING things like *shrug* instead of shrugging during conversation.

LOL I do that too!

But a real laugh wouldn't really be a LOL because it comes naturally. the lol is just...well computer slang...too much internet perhaps? LOL

You're not the first person I've known who does this. Don't worry about it. It'll soon be a fad.

I don't know if it's a big deal, but people will think you're weird. I would suggest not being online so much.

Love, Jack.
