Hey! I just picked up a '96 Cavalier (only $400 ;) and the speakers in the doors are pretty crappy! I want to put in some older speakers I had from my last car. I can't seem to get the door panel off though because I can't figure out how to remove the window crank and the handle that opens the door from the inside.

How can I go about doing this?? Any help would be appreciated!

The special tool is handy and quick, but you can also get it off with a standard (flat) screw driver. Push in on the panel near the crank hub to expose an "ohm-symbal-shaped" clip around the shaft (normally a sort of gold~ish color), put your screw driver up against one of the prongs and jam the back of it with the butt of your fist. Keep your eye out for where it flies, 'cause you'll want to snap it back in when you're done.

As for the handle / cup, there should be a single screw (or none). Remove that and either slide the cup forward or back to disconnect it and slide it off of the handle. The handle will probably stay in-tact on the internal door. I'm not intimately familiar with that specific vehicle, but many manufacturers employ similar assembly techniques.

I think Chevy has been doing it the same way for 50 years. You should be able to by an inexpensive tool at any parts store to remove the crank and handle. Basically what it is is a flat offset blade that slips between the handle and the door panel and it disengages the clip allowing removal. Be sure not to loose the clip.

You can go and buy this tool at any auto parts store however we just use a rag behind the handle and use a shoe shine motion until the clip comes off. Push the panel back and look And see which way the U shaped clip facing you want the rag or towel pushing and rubbing against the open end of the U shape use a skinny rag or shop towel and it will come off be patient and it will work be sure to watch for the clips their not expensive but why loose them and buy new ones.

Good luck.

There is a special tool used to remove them, usually referred to as a window crank removal tool. There is a metal pin holding the handle on from behind the crank. You have to slide the tool behind the crank, pop the pin and the handle will slide right off. You might be able to get the tool at an auto parts store, or even a WalMart.

There is a special "forked" tool you'll need to remove the window crank. Get them at auto parts stores.

The handle should have a screw in the handle well.

get a thin but strong rag and with your handel down slide the rag under the handel and pull up on both ends of the rag.. pull on one side then the other this will grip the device holding your handle on and should release it.. if its screwed you will have to find a screw driver.
