Air handler normally refers to a coil and fan system. The coil could be plates on a gas fired unit, heating coils on an electric unit, or steam or hot water coils.

First thing to check is the fan running?

If yes then check the heat source, are you getting heat supplied to the coil.

If both of those are working the unit is working. If either is not working it won't.

First, the air handler does not provide anything. Instead, it allows air to flow to the distribution points, or ducts. If you turn the heat on and no heat arrives you need to check the pilot light on a gas system and check your heat strip on an electric system.
