Back in the 50's everyone smoked. All the woman were thin, and kids started smoking as teenagers. I wondered now that we are a "non smoking culture" if there were statistics that showed our "weight" has increased while our "smoking " has decreased. Interested to hear peoples opinions and statistics on this.

If you quit smoking, and make no other changes in your life style, yes, you will gain some weight. But the largest cause of obesity in America is lack of exercise.
Instead of going out and doing things that provide exercise, people sit in front of the TV or a compueter for entertainment now.

Interesting observation.
I have always stayed around 175-180. 6'1".

I stopped smoking once, for four years. Gained to 245. After death of my wife, fell back to smoking, been steady at 180. 'Course, I don't eat as much.

As to the 50s, smoking went much farther back.
I guess smoking became more prevalent in the 40s, with returning vets, hooked. Bear in mind that tobacco was free and plentiful for the military, furnished by the tobacco companies.

I imagine doctors would poo poo a connection.

I'm really surprised that obesity has increased, I think we are well aware of the dangers of obesity in this age. I thought people were more health conscious now a days...

I don't have any stats but the reason we are a fat nation is because we are obsessed with fast food, junk food, TV , computers, and video games. Smoking is just a bad habit that ruins your health.

No, it's because of our fast food mentality. Back in the 50's, McDonalds wasn't on every corner, and the number 1 vegetable consumed by kids was NOT french fries.

Nope, not an excuse. I lost 40 pounds after I quit smoking by taking up walking.

Yeah, you're right. What can you do though, offer obese folks a cigarette? That's just going to kill them, too.

I want a cigarette, badly, now.
