I know someone who claims to have been in the US Army Special Forces. Everyone who knows this person knows what a liar he is. He's a lazy bum who got dropped out of high school because he was too lazy to get out of bed in the morning. He has told many stories which are obviously lies. Myself and several of my family are former military and we know the stories he has told are not true. We are very proud to have been in the military and served this great country, and he makes us sick, but we can't get any solid proof that he is lying about all this. Can someone help me?

Ask him about the special training they go through, its not classified and talk with one of the local army recruiters to see if you can get information about them. And also ask him what he is allowed to tell his captors if he is captured, if you email me I'll give you the answer to that one, I won't post it, or if you know it even better. But if you can catch him up in his stories, if you find him telling his stories then say "oh was this similar to this....." or "was this before or after this incident" just trip him up with his own words.

And yes while people that are pathological liars don't hurt you, they can do more harm to the military with thier fake stories and harm the countries image.

Assuming that you have credibility with some of persons that he has bullshitted, I think you should tell those persons as soon as you get the the chance not to believe a word he says and explain to them that all the others of your group agree, or better yet, they should tell them too. I doubt that you will ever have much luck with the liar himself. You could ask him specific details about his service, such as when, where, what units and then try to verify it somehow, but when you tell him he's lying, he will most likely fabricate some more to avoid admitting it or claim he was simply mistaken, as in "oh, gee, I must have been thinking of something else when I said that." until he gets indignant and angry at you for accusing him of lying. Pinning him down to tell the truth is just about like like trying to nail a piece of jello on the wall. When you're dealing with something or someone that slippery, you can't make anything stick. It's irritating as hell when you know you're being told bare-faced lies, so you've got my permission to confront him, for what that's worth, but don't lose any sleep over him and good luck to you!!

Show him any memorabilia that you may have from when you and your family were in the military. Of course this depends on how close you are to him....in this case..if you are pretty close then spring on him a surprise military social gathering of somekind and he is supposed to bring his so called "stuff". See what he says...I don't know any other way to catch him in one of his fantasies....I have a cousin that could tell you so many stories and none of them were true. My own mother was somewhat of a pl...but please you do have to remember these people actually BELIEVE their fabrications. It is a sickness...and should be dealt with accordingly...

you can't. if everyone knows it, why do you have to expose them? i understand that he is disgracing what you are proud of, but the real heroes are the ones in the military that fought or were ready to fight for the right for the liar to say things that upset people.

Find out which SF Group he "belonged" to, and then go to this website: http://www.specialforces78.com/ and see if you can find out if anyone knows him. Then report back to him the results. Of course, like the one responder mentioned, the DD 214 is positive proof, as long as he hasn't forged that.

Don't waste your time. You are so much better than he is. He is a loser, knows he's a loser...that's why he lies. He is making an *** out of himself...if I were you I would just continue to let him make an *** out of himself.
Thank you sir for your service to this country and for your sacrifice. God Bless You
