Howdy!

These days (oh, I just felt old saying that...) it's a good idea for kids to have access to a cell phone in case of emergency.

You didn't mention how old you are, but here are some ideas that might help you in your campaign to get a phone:

1) Get some brochures from various cell 'phone carriers about Family Plan deals. I know Cingular has one but other carriers might too. Do some homework.

2) Get some facts and figures about how much it would cost every month.

3) PROMISE them you won't get silly with it and run up a bill.

4) Investigate getting a "pay-as-you-go" plan where you buy $10, $15, $20 worth of minutes a month.

5) If you are given an allowance let your parents know that each week or month you'll put aside a certain amount ONLY for your 'phone costs and STICK TO IT. If they decide to go in on a family plan deal, make sure that you contribute to the cost.

6) Make sure that your parents are on your "speed dial" when you get the 'phone! Keep in touch with Mom & Dad.

7) That you will NOT turn it on or use it during class. You have to show them how responsible you are. Lots of schools are even banning cell 'phones because some kids have abused the privilege of carrying one. And it IS a privilege, not a "right" to have one.

Who knows?? Maybe they are waiting for Christmas (or whatever holiday) or your birthday to get one for you!!

Information and organization will be your friends on this one. I would really stress the Family Plan deals out there.

Hope this helps.

Good luck!

Save up the money, its gonna be hard to pay for it monthly though. A cell phone's the first step but then u need to pay for the service :(

Get a job, or just babysit for a lot of people lol.

Remember, it's not just the money it costs to buy one, it's the monthly fee to maintain one. What should you do? Save your money until you have enough to buy and maintain one. Until then, use your home phone like people did until cell phones came into use.

You sit down with you're parents tell them why it'd be a good idea for you to have one. Ex: If you're in a bad situation, you stuck somewhere, so you can check in with them, etc. Then say you will work for the phone to pay it off so they're not just giving it to you. If that doesn't work go to the grandparents.

If you are too young for a part-time job, consider mowing lawns, cleaning yards, and in the winter shoveling snow for cash to pay for the phone and the monthly service.

Have you tried bidding for one on Ebay? Sometimes you can get lucky and get some really cheap stuff on there, especially if you're not too fussy about what model you want.
