Well, people come to the Internet to say things that they would likely lose their jobs or be ostracized from society for for saying in public. Also, the Internet has made a lot of people atheists because religion has never been able to stand up to exchange of information. When the printing presses first started up there was a dramatic rise in the population of atheists and the Internet is doing the same thing, even more so by allowing people to ask the questions they have always wanted to ask in private - without fear of ridicule from the people they have to deal with on a regular basis.
The Internet is killing the God Delusion..thank goodness for the Internet.

What makes you think it's a higher percentage here? Do you know the religious leanings of everyone you pass on the street on a daily basis?

Actually, in analyzing the answers to questions, it is my observation that the mix is pretty much consistent with the USA religious demographic... about 75% Christian, 10% atheist/agnostic, the rest mixed.

perhaps, because in real life the topic of religion does not come up in conversation very often. Do you ask everyone you meet what their religious views are?

In real life people don't walk around proclaiming their agnostic or atheist view, nor do they often wear jewelry or clothing that would indicate such views.

The religious people are probably too busy praying.

Depends on your experience of real life. My perception is that there are *far* more religious people on here than we ever see in real life (I'm in the UK) and they have far more bizarre and extreme views on things than we ever see in real life.

i think perhaps the voices of the atheist/agnostic is a little louder ... asking for proof
the religious person is quieter ... not needing to proove
but thats just how it should be in my opinion .... ask away and be heard .. its all good

No. It is just that most atheists and agnostics are still being judged by others and find it easier to be themselves online where if you persecute them you still can't fire them or cost them their lively hood, or cause any harm to them.

I think that a lot of people are too intimidated to honestly state their disbelief in public for fear of reprimand.
There are a lot of 'closeted atheists' out there.
