Hi there...there three good brushes/grooming combs that work well with long-haired cats:

The Shedding blade removes a lot of dead hair should be used first: (photo: http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?siteID=Ykc2o4IsC1w-lBoIol_eKcOvpNUyDbj2CQ&cm_ven=LS&cm_cat=null&cm_pla=null&cm_ite=ProductFeed&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023690&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302033734&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441777730&bmUID=1157587933144)
Then a combo slicker/groom brush to silken/soften and shine the long coat hair: (photo: http://www.bullwrinkle.com/index.html?ShoppingPages/petgrooming.htm~indexmain)

A coon brush

I actually have 2 main coon crosses, one w/ a 3x coat. what you should use is really whatever will get down to the undercoat. I use a metal comb and the regular slicker brush. we usually also keep him shaved underneath from his belly back to his tail because he's got so much fur he isn't the best at cleaning himself. but try a comb on your cat and the regular brush. see what gets through.

But don't use your hair brush on your cat and yourself because you know cats aren't clean, they're covered in cat spit.

For my Maine Coons, I have an undercoat brush to remove dead hair, I also have a dematting comb for when they get mats, and a regular brush for their top coat.

I use a short, plastic, bristle brush on my kitten Hamilton. He's an all white "very rare" Maine Coon. The plastic bristles have white beads on the ends of them so they are not sharp. He really enjoys being brushed

Try a metal flea comb, at first you won't be getting into the undercoat, but the more often you comb the better you will do... it gets rid of a LOT of extra hair!
