Check with a local grocery store for mini pumpkins. I think WalMart has some about now. Usually there is a recipe/sticker on it for prepping the pumpkin. As far as I can remember, you split the pumpkin in 1/2, scoop out the seeds & bake at 375-ish for about 30 minutes. (Don't forget to put it on a baking sheet to catch anything) It will be soft & pretty mushy. Then you just scoop the pumpkin mash out, get as close to the skin as you can, then add the spices. (Again, on the sticker) I tried this for pumpkin pie last year for the first time and my family LOVED it! They had no idea it was from a pumpkin and not a can.

Solid pack pumpkin is just pumpkin - nothing extra. Canned pumpkin pie filling is pumpkin, spices, and a little sugar. (Even the pie filling has other stuff added before going into the pie crust, so following the recipe on your can won't help.) You can try adding pumpkin pie spice (or a combination of cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg) and some sugar. I'm not sure of the proportions, however.
