Now that it's not required by law to report a dog being run over, your beloved pet could be killed and you'd never know. Do they just sweep up the body without checking for micro-chips? If so, don't you think there should be some provision for checking before they are disposed of?

i think that they will be checked but this will depend on who ends up with them. your local council will be responsible for the removal of any dead animal and they do have dog warden people so they should check cos whats the point of having database for such microchips in the first place.

It comes down to morals. Usually someone accidently runs over an animal they call the SPCA or the vets office to deal with the disposal and or care if it is still alive. The SPCA or the vet are the ones that should be checking for the microchip.
As I said.. morals... there are ppl out there that will just drive over the animal and forget about it... or even get out toss it to the side of the road and go on.
Its sad.
I think though that if your dog was lost and you went and had the microchip run through the system you should be able to discover if your animal is alive or dead merley by location and whether or not the chip has tracked movement.

It is the law for a vet or animal shelter ie RSPCA to check for a microchip. The owner can then be notifed as they are liable for any damage caused by the animal. That is the main point of the microchip!

If I hit a dog with my vehicle, I'd stop & take it to the vet. Hopefully the vet would find the chip. But if I saw a dog lying on the side of the road, I probably wouldn't stop.

It's rotten but probably what most folks would do.'

when they pick it up dont they take it to the vet to be disposed of? im pretty sure they do, and then vet would scan it, because if he scanned it and it was chipped then he could ring the owner and get them to pay for it to be disposed of otherwise he would loose out on money, and you no what vets are like

If animal control picks it up I am pretty sure they would look for a chip or any other identifying feature. If you lost your pet, I hope you find it.

if the animal is picked up by the dog warden, rspca, charties or taken to a vets - they should do, before its destroyed. all dogs should have a collar with tags as your supposed to do by law anyway.

YES. I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT A VET/ANIMAL SHELTER IS REQUIRED BY LAW TO CHECK ALL ANIMALS WHO ARE FOUND FOR MICROCHIPS. THE CARCASS WOULD BE CHECKED SO THE OWNER CAN BE NOTIFIED.
