Try going to a local auction. My husband buys cars for less than $500 that have been in minor accidents or were stolen. They may have small problems, but for $1000 you can probably find something real decent.

Since you wanna drive cheap:
Go for a light weight jap or european car.
They use half the fuel compared with the heavy american cars.

newspaper (my area has a free car newspaper also) or just roam the countryside.... usually that how I find cars is roaming the country side for people with the for sale sign with no advertising
