I'm looking to get a jeep wrangler for recreational use, like driving in the snow and maybe towing a small trailer(under 1500 lbs). I already have a commuter car, so i just need a jeep for bad weather. Is there any years or specific models to avoid? Iwill most likely get a TJ, but not brand new maybe 97-02. thanks guys.

The jeep TJ's are pretty good all years but improvements were made so the newer the better preferably 2000 and up. In 2000 they did change to the NV3500 manual trans(stronger albeit noisy improvement) and went with a distributorless ignition system plus changed to anew design softop which was quieter and better insulated.. A heavy duty rear end was available (dana 44) in all years and is easily identified by an angular as opposed to round rear end cover and a threaded fill plug in cover rather than a rubber plug. I also would spend the extra money for a 6 cylinder rather than the 4 as the mileage is not that much different and the 6 is pretty much a great , long lasting ,near bulletproof motor with a well suited torque curve.

If you're going with a soft top, you may want to look more at the '02 end of things. I forget which year it is that they changed the OEM soft top to the heavier sailcloth, which really, really, REALLY reduces wind noise. The heaters in the TJs are REALLY nice, so don't worry about it being too cold (my 99 TJ warmed up faster than my brother's 99 RAV-4 in Chicago winters, because my Jeep didn't have all the glass to hold the cold!). Just learn the tips and tricks for clearing ice off of soft top windows!

Also, the 97-00 models (maybe up to 01, not sure) have exhaust manifold issues. If you buy used, ask if the manifold has been repaired/replaced. If it hasn't been, odds are you'll have to do it.

As with anything else you will find some that are more problematic than others. The year is not really a measure of quality. My 1973 CJ5 is probably more reliable than a lot of things on the road, but it took a lot of $$ to get it that way. No matter what you choose, be sure to have a qualified Jeep tech inspect it before purchase.

ya id go with a tj those are the best by far. you cant beat the coil springs all around with if you find it 4 wheel disc brakes. the insides also set up a lot nicer then the yj or cj where the insturment panel wasnt all infront of you and was instead spread all accross the jeeps front panel. the interior comfort is a lot better in a tj as well it stays warmer longer and has better weather stripping than any yj ive been in.

IF it was ME - I would check ALL there RECALLS - and there have been quite a few lately - & if jeep tells U differently - U better find somebody that will tell U the truth - Personally I liked the ---W W 11 (1945) They make great buggys. I have had 2 many electrical problems with the new GRAND Cherokee & cherokee.

You are going to be okay with those years. Make sure the previous owner maintained the vehicle and look at the records closely. Make sure the fluids were changed on a regular basis.
