My Husband had the same problem he thought he was hideous and every time he would look in the mirror he would think that therefore he saw that. Then one dayhe decided he would look in the mirror and said out loud "You are a sexy mofo" he would do this every morning, and it took him a while but he started believing it and he got more confidence. In all honesty to many other people he is not attractive but in my eyes there is no better looking man in the world, I say this because yes beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. And to someone in this world you are the most beautiful woman in the world. As for being yourself, I used to hide who I really am from the world. But one day I woke up and realized that if I am not truly myself then I will never truly be happy. Be yourself and one day you will find true love, and until then you can realize that hiding from the world was causing you a lot of pain, and find joy in life.

Both. A lot of times the two go hand in hand. Also, these responses can stem from ignorance and fear.
Seems silly to me and pointless to degrade someone over a forum such as this.
But there's a certain safety in it. An anger they can't express in person, because they fear to do so. But the anonymity provides a distance that is safe to ridicule from.

I honestly think they just believe the other person is being stupid. That's how I feel, anyway. My self-esteem is great, but when I see a really, really stupid question like this one, I call it out on being really stupid.
And I'll tell you WHY it's stupid, too. It makes an assumption that anyone who ever insults anyone else is self-loathing and/or has low self-esteem. Your grasp of interpersonal relationships is weak.

People are products of their environment and give what they received. We are all taught by are parents who were taught before them and sometimes hate perpetuates throughout. I believe everyone is entitled to an opinion and even if others are not of the same opinion, they should not hatefully bash others.

I think it's some kind of self-hate. They hate themselves and justify this by trying to make everyone else hate them too.

I think it's either ignorance as in uneducated, or just plain meanness.
