Laminate flooring may be the perfect option for a basement. One pro is that most laminate flooring is free floating, meaning that it isn't permanent (it can be taken up without any problems if you change your mind). Just snap it together and lay it down, no glue is required. Laminate flooring is relatively easy to take care of and most types come with a 25 year warranty. Also, laminate flooring is about 50% cheaper than hardwood flooring. However, laminate flooring doesn't look as nice as hardwood floors (my opinion) and can chip on the edges if it isn't tightly fitted together.

Have you looked into engineered hardwood flooring? It's "real" hardwood flooring but can be used in basements. These floors can also be installed over concrete, without the inconvenience of having to underlay plywood first, as is often the case in condominium units or basements. It can even be sanded and refinished if needed in the future. Laminate flooring is really "plastic" The wood grain never looks real and it does not age well. Please visit a flooring store before going with the Laminate and check out engineered hardwood flooring.

Pros of laminate flooring - easy to install, relatively cheap, easy to clean, feels good under your feet, good wear and durability, can look expensive but isn't
Cons of laminate flooring - doesn't work well if the floor will get a lot of water (bathrooms), corners chip easily, very slippery when wet, may seem cold in winter, can seem noisy if you are used to carpet

Pros are the price, cons are the way it looks - but for a basement apartment, it sounds like just the trick.

I have wood laminate in my kitchen and bathrooms. We absolutely love it. It looks and feels great, and it is easy to clean. I actually just use a Swiffer wet mop to clean it, and it is so simple. Good luck!~

The lamination eventually turns yellow and looks gross. It's cheaper.
