Ever notice when someone is hostile to someone, the other person becomes hostile in return? People with strong feelings on a subject tend to be rather outspoken about it. These are the ones you usually hear.
Why be negative? Logically, they shouldn't be, but they are. Religion is inextricably tied to emotion and there's no hard, universal proof for any belief.
Consider the logical arguments you've heard driven by emotion. While emotion can be a powerful force, it tends to disrupt logical thought. A carefully measured amount of emotion applied to a well-thought out argument can convince almost anyone, but an emotional rant just inspires anger in return.
You say they'll never change - maybe. Why be negative: like me - good, not like me - bad. And people tend to react negatively to things they think bad.

These are not true atheists. They are mirroring what they have against organized religion with their ranting. A true atheist just is. No need to become evangelical for the cause, Ha! They might as well carry the Origin of the Species around like the bible thumpers. Bah, humbug! Sounds to me like they're worried they didn't make the right choice. When you really get there, you're there. That's it. It's an existential choice and you live with it.

People who are passionate in their beliefs are generally attracted to discussion and debate about those beliefs. In a forum such as this, that often reduces down to mere insults. There are plenty of level headed believers and non-believers, they just don't get caught up in the silly fray. After all, they are level headed. So we end up with a high number of remarks from bigoted people, unfortunately.

Because some people are hateful and intolerant towards those that are not of their "kind". You just have to learn to live with it (unless you believe you can change it).

You want to know what REAL hate is? Strap on a bomb and go into the biggest crowd you can find and blow yourself up! Sound familiar?
Now that is hate for all beliefs. They even kill those of their own kind [religion].

Usually when somebody tells me that they believe I will spend eternity being tortured, I respond with a big hug and kiss. Somebody once said something about turning the other cheek but I forget just who it was.

ooh. well firstly it began with religion and the bible. before there were atheists there were simply people who did not follow any religion. the bible says that anyone who does not beleive in god is a fool and they do no good.

eventually the word "atheist" came about and the nonbeleivers (some) accepted the title. one who does not beleive in a god.

the theists (religious peopel) claim that their beliefs are absolutely correct and without error., the nonbelivers (who usually beleive in science) disagree, saying or origins are natural.

and so kicked off the "war". we (atheista and nonbeleivers) beleive our origins are natural, science supports this immensely. the theists (religious) beleive we were created by adiety who has no beginning. only one can be true so it boils down to evidence.

from there we move on...its a battle for who is right? is it divine creation or natural selection?

its up to you to weight the evidence.
