Skip the toys for next year... Get one of these or a combination of these:
- cold weather clothes sized 18 mos.
- warmer weather clothes sized 24 mos
- gift certificate to target or kids clothing stores
- board books
- nice shoes sized 6 (unless he's a really big kid, this shoe size will still be too big for him but he can wear them later on). we can't risk getting something too small...

my son is turning one on friday. we got him some of the big building blocks, so he can start working on the skills for the actual building.
We also got him one of those bean bag chairs-it has thomas the train on it-its cute.
Also some clothes would be good, just makes sure you get the right size according to the season. 18 months for winter (bigger is better than too small )
If nothing else get him a collection of cute books that can be read to him until he starts to read some himself. Good luck

You can't go wrong with a book. He'll keep it for a long time, plus its more meaningful. Then when he grows up he can read it. Go for classic Dr. Suess book or maybe where the wild things are, something classic.
